How much is enough?

Below is a sample from the reading "Money and Security":

I used to worry constantly about money because it never seems enough. And so the so the question is, enough for what? Planning to have enough for my material needs was the easy part. With some calculation, I can work out how much money I need for food, clothes, a house, adjust the values for inflation, and create a plan to save and invest.

But there are so many things that could happen to me and my loved ones that are not in my control! What if I get sick and can no longer work? What if my parents fall sick? What if my child need special education? What if all of this were to happen at the same time?

This is our inner storyteller on steroids, and could go on ad infinitum. And the first awakening came to me when I realized what a strange idea it was, that peace will come only when I have enough money to cover the full set of possibilities that could ever go wrong. At this rate, no amount of money would ever be enough and would only feed even more worry and bring continual struggle inside.

The more I could see that my storyteller was driven by fear, judgement, and despair, and that I had a choice to move towards joy and healing, the more its visits became shorter.

Guiding Questions:
  1. How do you understand security? How much of security do you find in money? What else do you find security in?
  2. What small steps can we start building security, and in a way that creates a positive virtuous cycle, where less and less security is needed over time?
Participant Reflections:

"The greatest gift is that security can be diversified and invested in, in different forms. Eg: building strong friendships, learning how to garden. Get a small plan or seedling and start watering it :) Thanks Betty for the tip!"

"To find security in myself, and that despite my insecurities, which are inevitable, I can learn to overcome them, and if not accept them. .And I wish the same for everyone in the group and my loved ones. Tomorrow... I will reach out to a friend and let her/him know the same, and assure her/him that we can and will walk the path together."

"Everything in life changes all the time, however what we can do now is to enjoy the process, live in uncertainty, but at the same time build security for myself and my family/people around us -- and all forms of security~ financial security, emotional security, spiritual security and self security. From tomorrow onwards, I will continue to build up my self-esteem and feel more secured as an individual."
