Discover technology, community, and how to change the world
Picture

Why Silicon Valley?

Silicon valley is a state of mind more than a physical location. Home to technology giants like Apple, Google, and Facebook, it is not only the tech capital of the world, but also an explosion of entrepreneurial energy, community organizing, and thought leadership. Visit top universities like Stanford and Berkeley, meet pioneers of technology that are revolutionizing their industries, and go behind the scenes to discover what it actually takes to make an impact on the world. The expedition is designed to expand a participant's worldview and understand future trends. This will not only inform their own purpose and career journeys, but grow their ability as young leaders to make profit and impact in the world.

Programme Highlights

  • Visits to the mothership campuses of Facebook and Google
  • Student mixers and campus tours at Stanford and Berkeley University
  • Get up close and personal in close-door sessions with entrepreneurs and social change-makers
  • Discover the communities, social enterprises, and benefit corporations that are pioneering new models of change

Themes

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Entrepreneurship is more than just doing business - how does one transform an idea into something real that can have wide-reaching impact? Students will discover their own innovator archetype, as well as the mindset, tools, and essential ingredients in Silicon Valley's "secret sauce" to innovation.

  • Personal Passion and Purpose - We'll use the backdrop of Silicon Valley's leadership and imagination as a way of exploring our own journeys as young leaders. What questions am I facing in my life? What can I learn from the leaders we meet? Which of humanity's grand challenges do I resonate with the most? How can I use my imagination to start small within my school or community?
  • Exponential Technologies - There are technologies that are exponentially growing like artificial intelligence & robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology & digital fabrication, networks & computing systems. These are now being used to address humanity’s grand challenges for billions of people like education, energy, environment, food, global health, poverty, security, space and water.

  • Social Impact Business Models - With global challenges in sustainability and rising inequality, business-as-usual is being challenged by emerging models of social enterprise and benefit corporations. By balancing triple-bottom-lines of profits, people, and the planet, these models of business are solving gaps that traditional governments and non-profits cannot fill.

What participants have said...

"I feel more compelled to volunteer now, after seeing how passionate some of the people in SF were about their social missions. Before, I just felt like the world is hopeless and there's so point trying to make a positive impact because it won't work. But now my perspective has changed, I feel motivated to make a difference in the world in my own way." - Shannen, 16
"I was most touched by the visit to the Delancey Street Foundation. On the second/third night of the trip I remember being quite skeptical about how "paying it forward" could actually help others. In Delancey Street I was exposed to the true essence of healing others to heal yourself and could see the actual fruition of the process." - Chloe, 16
